Our Board: diverse, highly involved, and recognized for community leadership
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville & Buncombe County was incorporated Oct. 1, 2002. As per our bylaws, each member serves a three-year term, and one-third of all members’ terms end each year.
This year, we mourn the loss of Clara Jeter, who died August 15 after more than 30 years’ dedicated involvement with our organization. Though her directors service was ending, Clara was looking forward to continuing to volunteer with us for years to come, and her expertise, experience, and leadership will be sorely missed.
We also bid farewell to longtime board members Julia Nooe and Leni Sitnick, both of whom were loyal and important colleagues for the past six years of board service, and as committee members for many years before that.
We have also welcomed new board members this year: Annie Burton, David King and Je’Wana Grier-McEachin (one-year terms); and Namurah Blakely and Darryl Rhymes (three-year terms).
If you know of anyone who might be a valuable addition to our board, please let us know. The directors’ Classes are as follows:
Oralene Simmons, Chairperson (2017)
Namurah Blakely (’18)
Karen Cowan (’17)
Joseph Fox (’17)
David King (’16)
Joseph McGuire (’18)
Darryl Rhymes (’18)
